  • Increase Revenue by Creating Back End Offers on Affiliate Sales

    Published November 26th, 2007

Thanks to guest contributor Robert Paul Williams for this interesting article on creating back end offers on affiliate sales.

One great way to sell products is by creating an affiliate program. Affiliates sell for commission and are paid when they sell a product or service.

Back end offers give the potential for even more profits and better customer loyalty. They help both the merchant and the affiliate. If you can offer a customer a relevant back end offer, you can turn one sale into multiple sales.

What is a Back End Offer?

A back end offer is an offer made after your customer has completed his order. This could be for any product. It is usually a product more expensive than what they originally bought. The back end offer should be targeted to customers who purchased the front end product. It should be complimentary to the front end product so the customer can find added value in it.

You can make back end offers straight after the original sale or some time afterwards. If you offer something straight after the sale, this might result in the impulse to buy more. Some customers would rather wait and see how they like the first product before they buy anything else. This offers the potential of additional sales to the affiliate if the customer does like the original purchase.

    Incentive Offers

Offering incentives or price cuts can increase your back end sales. Perhaps you could offer a discount for a limited time reserved for people who bought the front end product. Offer free bonuses like audio recordings or ebooks. If you give the customer a voucher or gift certificate, they may be more inclined to buy more products in the future. The voucher could be for a limited time only as an added incentive to buy.

What Products are Best for Back End Sales?

A lot of marketers have their affiliates promote something low priced, such as an ebook, and then offer items with higher prices. The more they buy, the more offers they will receive. Everyone likes to feel they are getting something for nothing. If somebody buys an ebook, you might offer a related software program. If they buy that, perhaps you can offer a site membership with a monthly fee. If they buy that too, maybe you can sell them tickets for an in-depth seminar.

It is best not to offer all this at one sitting because you will confuse the customer. Offering one extra product after the first purchase and maybe one after that is probably enough for one customer. Get his email address so you can email him with future offers.

Back end offers are a really good way to increase your profits. They also give the affiliates more incentive to promote the front end products because they know a sale might result in further commissions from the sale of back end products. Even if the customer chooses not to buy the products immediately, they might buy later if they are happy with their original product.
