Keyword research and a special Wordtracker offer
Published October 9th, 2007Keyword research is one of the cornerstones of effective internet marketing, whether for search engine optimisation, pay per click advertising or affiliate marketing. Identifying keywords that people are searching for, with limited competition is the key to driving traffic to your site.
If your keywords are too general or too over-used, the possibility of visitors actually making it all the way to your site - or of seeing any real profits from the visitors that do arrive - decreases dramatically.
Keywords serve as the foundation of your internet marketing strategy. If they are not chosen carefully, no matter impressive your site is, the right people may never find it. Therefore, your first step in developing your online strategy is to gather and evaluate keywords and phrases.
Identifying the right keywords and phrases for your site is not as easy as you may think. You need to get into the mindset of thinking how your potential customers think when searching on the web. One effective way of doing this is to ask existing customers for words and phrases that they associate with your products or services. You may well find out that your understanding of your business and your customers’ understanding is significantly different.
You may wish to add some other keywords of your own in at this point. Don’t forget to include your company and products names at this point – it’s amazing how many companies forget to optimise their site for the company name!
The next step in the process is keyword evaluation. The aim of evaluation is to narrow down your list to a manageable number of words and phrases that will direct the highest number of quality visitors to your website. In evaluating the effectiveness of keywords you should focus on three considerations: popularity, specificity, and motivation.
The more popular your keyword is, the more likely the chances are that it will be typed into a search engine which in turn will lead to your site.
The more specific your keyword is, the greater the likelihood that the consumer who is ready to purchase your goods or services will find you.
The final factor is consumer motivation. This requires putting yourself inside the mind of the customer rather than the seller to figure out what motivation prompts a person looking for a service or product to type in a particular word or phrase. You should aim to find people who are ready to act or make a purchase.
Once you have chosen your keywords, your work is not complete. You should continually monitor and evaluate performance across a variety of search engines, and keep an eye on developments in the industry. The Search Engines are constantly refining their systems and you need to keep on top of latest developments.
Tools like Google Analytics make it simple to monitor keyword effectiveness over time and it’s also free!

Hi
As with WordTracker you can also try the KeywordDiscovery - Keyword Research Tool which has a much larger keyword database. Great for tail end and niche keyword research.
Cheers

Hi Nicole,
I agree, Keyword Discovery is also a good tool. I also use Keyword Elite for keyword research.
Another good tool for long tail keywords, which is free, is HitTail.
Thanks for the feedback
